Windows & Doors Competitor Teardown — The Study
What it takes to beat the sites that rank: deep profiles across four target markets plus the Ultimate Windows & Doors Site spec assembled from the best of each. Live SERPs captured 2026-10-05.
window replacement [city] in each market — top 2 real contractor sites per city from organic (retailers/directories excluded and noted; franchises and EMD operators tagged). Each site profiled at source level: every page inventoried, raw HTML inspected for schema, tel: links, chat widgets, forms, call tracking, plus offers, warranty terms, financing partners, and verbatim title/meta/H1 tags. Full detail lives in the four city pages. The Five Findings That Matter
1. Nobody publishes prices — the PAA wall is undefended
"How much does it cost to replace a window in [city]?" sits in every market's People-Also-Ask — and the field answers with silence. SR publishes nothing; MHI offers relative costs with 2017 ROI data; Window World shows financing math only; Thermal nothing; Guardian ships only a schema priceRange string. The one exception, Longhorn, publishes full cost tables ($550–$850 single hung, "10 windows $5,500" anchors) — and ranks #2 in Houston. The market's real anchors ($750/window, $6,999 full-house) float around unowned. Honest published ranges is the open lane in all four cities.
2. Energy education is the biggest content gap in the study
Every site says "energy efficient." Not one publishes SHGC/U-factor specs, a full-frame vs retrofit explainer, or current tax-credit content — Energy Shield's 25C page is stuck in 2018–2021 law, Thermal has zero energy content, Window World has a glossary but no credits. The education SERP is near-empty: U-factor tables, Energy Star climate zones, utility rebates (LADWP, APS, ONCOR, CenterPoint) and the 25C federal credit are all unclaimed top-of-funnel real estate.
3. Three ownable stories — pick one and make it structural
Factory-direct (Energy Shield: "factory, dealer and installer", "Zero Warranty Headaches", factory-tour video, Made-in-USA badges — a moat a dealer cannot copy). Franchise offer-machine (Window World: 0%/18mo, "$89/mo" anchors, Wells Fargo open line, exit-intent capture, 42 city pages, 10+ tracked numbers — but it leaks "Window World of Baton Rouge" copy onto its Dallas site). Local craft (Thermal: "we make it here, our own employees install it, no middle man", 14,000+ homes). The template ships a positioning strip — business model → differentiator → proof number — instead of generic "quality windows" copy.
4. Warranty mechanics + named financing are the quiet deal-closers
Window World publishes the full warranty machine — coverage table, glass-breakage rider, transfer clause (immediate transferee, $350 fee, 30-day window) and a warranty claim form that turns support into recurring lead flow. MHI stacks Anlin double-lifetime transferable + PACE + utility programs + "banks compete" ($2k–$50k). Energy Shield names Synchrony with $55k credit lines. Everyone else waves at "lifetime warranty" with zero terms — and transferable terms are the wedge against Window World that Guardian and Longhorn both leave unused.
5. The conversion basics are missing across the board
SR Window Systems has no phone number on its website and zero schema. Thermal lacks tap-to-call entirely, carries a dead analytics property, and ships a stray /testing-top-bar-notification/ page in its sitemap. Window World publishes no LocalBusiness/NAP schema at all. Guardian's NAP contradicts itself three ways (Houston vs Richmond vs San Marcos coordinates). MHI leaves telephone empty in schema and swaps wrong coordinates onto city pages. The template's default chrome — working tap-to-call + SMS, clean schema with a real phone, one honest NAP — beats the entire field before a single word of copy.
SERP Landscape — What Actually Ranks
Live Google results captured 2026-10-05 (DataForSEO, mobile) for window replacement [city]. The retail/franchise wall is thick: Home Depot takes #1 organic in LA, Window World runs 5,200 reviews in Houston. LA's map pack runs on 1–42 reviews — the softest pack this side of water damage.

The Ultimate Windows & Doors Site — Best of All 8
The target for the windows & doors drop template (Drop #002): each ranking site's best move, with the field's shared failures excluded. This is a considered-purchase niche — $5k–$25k+ tickets, showroom trust, and shoppers who research specs before they call. Teach and price, and you win the call.
1. Site Architecture steal: Longhorn's product×city matrix + MHI's localization + the pro plan-upload path
- Product×city matrix:
/window-types/{style}/{city}/(single hung, double hung, casement, picture, sliding, bay × metro cities) with unique neighborhood copy per city ("Heights bungalows", "Memorial", "Third Ward") — never thin spun variants; plus keyword-rich service slugs (/replacement-windows/{city}/) - City specials ad-landing pages with hard price anchors ("10 Windows For Only $5,500") mirrored in Google Ads — anchors beat "call for quote" against the $6,999 SERP anchor
- Money + education hubs: cost tables by type + whole-home bundles, U-factor/SHGC glossary, full-frame vs retrofit, 25C tax credits + utility rebates per state, warranty page with claim form
- Door lines from day one: entry, patio, storm, multi-slide/arcadia conversions (the highest-ticket story in the study: "cutting openings 5 to 30 feet wide… permits, demolition, framing, headers, drywall, electrical, stucco repair")
- "Why [Brand] vs the big brands" comparison page + historic-home module (replica profiles, divided lites, preservation rules) + pro path: plan upload with bid-deadline triage
2. Homepage Anatomy — exact order steal: AZ Valley's offer-hero + Thermal's factory claim + Window World's process band
- Utility bar: "Call or Text (XXX) · Get Free Estimate →" with
tel:ANDsms:links - Hero that offers, doesn't describe: "$0 down · 0% for 12 months (OAC)" + dollar-off anchors + "FREE in-home estimate — we bring the showroom to you" + tap-to-call; offer slots carry expiry dates (never a "New Year Sale" running in October)
- Positioning strip: one ownable sentence ("Factory-Direct Replacement Windows" / "20+ Years, Veteran-Owned, In-House Installers" / "Custom-made in our [City] factory, installed by our own employees") + proof number
- Stat band: years · homes served · windows installed (editable, each with a source story)
- 3-step process band: Free In-Home Estimate → Made-to-Order Manufacturing → Expert Installation & Lifetime Support, each with one objection-killing sentence
- Materials comparison grid: vinyl / aluminum / fiberglass / composite + full-frame vs retrofit explainer
- Energy module: U-factor/SHGC spec tables + Energy Star climate zones + 25C tax credit + local utility rebates
- Warranty table: lifetime glass seal, labor, parts, accidental breakage rider, transfer-on-sale clause + "File a Claim" form
- Financing card: named lender + "$X/mo" examples + mandatory fine-print row
- Project gallery + before/after + live review widget with counts + "Just installed in {neighborhood}" posts
- Cost bands ("typical project ranges… market average, not our quote") + comparison block vs big brands
- Service areas + NAP + map · FAQ → FAQPage schema · final CTA · mobile Call/Text bar
3. The Offer Stack steal: Window World's offer machine + Longhorn's package anchors
| Offer | Copy to ship | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Hero offer | "$0 Down · 0% for 12 Months (OAC)" + "Up to $300 Off Each Window, $500 Off Each Entry Door" | AZ Valley |
| Package anchor | "10 Windows For Only $5,500" (*white single & double hung, under 110 united inches) | Longhorn |
| Payment anchor | "Windows from $89/mo" + named lender open line ("apply once, use again") | Window World |
| Price lock | "90-Day Price Lock · No Coupon Gimmicks" | MHI |
| Consultation | "Free In-Home Estimate — we bring the showroom to you" / "Virtual estimates available" | Guardian + Team All Star |
| Tax stack | "25C Federal Tax Credit + [utility] rebates — we handle the paperwork" | MHI's programs, modernized |
4. The Trust Stack steal: Energy Shield's factory proof + MHI's badge wall
- Manufacturer authority: authorized-dealer/certified-installer badges (Anlin, Milgard, Andersen Fibrex, Pella, ProVia slots) + NFRC/AAMA/Energy Star certification strip
- Structural proof: factory-tour video OR "our own employees install, no subcontractors" + plant/showroom photo with address (Maps-credible)
- Warranty as a headline asset: coverage table with the transfer clause spelled out + claim form (product checkboxes + serial + photo upload)
- License numbers in every footer (CSLB / ROC) + named owner + crew + "we service everything we sell" + "no pressure, no gimmicks"
5. Conversion Mechanics steal: Guardian's window-count qualifier + Window World's tracking map
- Call-or-text strip everywhere (tel + sms), sticky mobile bar — the field's biggest leak is missing phones
- Tiered intake: homeowner quick-quote (name/phone/email/address + window-count qualifier 2–5 / 6–10 / 11+ + service dropdown + preferred timing) + pro plan upload (quantity, opening sizes, bid deadline)
- Self-schedule estimate slot + exit-intent/email capture slot + thank-you page + honeypot + reCAPTCHA + SMS consent
- DNI call tracking with a source map (Google/PMax/YouTube/Meta/Microsoft/Nextdoor/door hangers/home shows) + GA4 + Meta enhanced conversions — never a dead analytics property
6. SEO & Schema steal: the full clean graph + the education cluster
- LocalBusiness (with a real telephone) + Service per city + Product/Offer per window line + FAQPage + AggregateRating + BreadcrumbList + VideoObject — validated NAP everywhere (the field ships empty telephones, wrong coordinates, 3-way contradictions)
- Energy-education cluster: U-factor/SHGC glossary, Low-E/argon/triple-pane specs, Energy Star climate-zone tables, full-frame vs retrofit, 25C + utility rebate pages per state — near-empty SERP, take it
- Cost cluster for the PAA wall + project-photo → post pipeline ("Just installed: 12 windows in {neighborhood}") + hurricane/impact content with TDI + ASTM E1886/E1996 claims (Houston) + historic-home content
7. The Review Engine — market-dependent, again
8. Do NOT — the anti-patterns found in the field
- No phone on the site (SR), no tap-to-call (Thermal), empty
telephonein schema (MHI) — in a call-driven category - Franchise template leaks ("Window World of Baton Rouge" ×3 on the Dallas site), stray test pages in sitemaps (
/testing-top-bar-notification/), dead analytics properties from another era - 3-way NAP contradictions (Guardian: Houston vs Richmond vs San Marcos), wrong coordinates swapped onto city pages (MHI)
- Stale money content: "Giant New Year Sale!" in October, tax-credit pages citing 2018–2021 law, 2017 ROI stats
- 20-field plan-upload forms with no phone field and no spam protection; 500KB–2MB page weights (lean static wins Core Web Vitals here); doorway-spam city pages; keyword-stuffed legacy doorway content

Next Steps
- Drop #002 (Windows & Doors) builds from this spec — per the Extended Roadmap this is the next build: published cost bands, the energy/tax-credit cluster, the warranty-mechanics table and the window-count intake are the differentiators nobody ships together.
- Lead with education against the retailer wall — Home Depot owns #1 in LA on brand, not content. The specs/costs/tax-credit cluster is the only lane they don't occupy.
- Price the Review Engine by market type — LA-class (soft packs) vs Phoenix/Houston-class (fortress packs) need different promises; windows makes that two-speed story concrete alongside water damage.
- Doors are the upsell engine — multi-slide/arcadia wall conversions ($10k+) belong in the template's nav from day one, per the Energy Shield finding.
